  Texas, after a brief period as an independent country and prior to that a province of Mexico which before 1821 was itself a colony of Spain, joined the United States in 1845. This was the primary cause of the Mexican War. Texas is characterized by large-scale cattle ranching and oil wells but by the 21st century, it is the second largest state in population and a economically diversified expanse, with a growing manufacturing, technology and educational network.
