Jacques Cartier was the first European to set foot on the island of Montreal, but it wasn't until 1642 that a permanent European settlement was established and 'the mountain' island was named Mont Royal, from which the city took its name. Today Montreal is a city of immigrants that has become Quebec Province's economic and cultural center.
Note: Montreal is a French speaking city but, since it is still part of Canada, most residents speak English quite well; however the separatist issue is still a persistent feature of the city, in other words, Montreal takes pains to retain this linguistic heritage.

Montreal has reliably arctic winters. This makes the city a winter wonderland that is great for winter sports but button up that parka. From May to early September warm long nights and pleasant daytime temperatures offer great weather for festivals, and a myriad of other events.
'Underground City', a unique climate-controlled labyrinth of 2000 shops and 29 km (18 miles) of corridors, is the place to be in the winter if you areuse to a more temperate climate.Ê

Two airports serve Montreal
Dorval, 22.5 km (14 miles) west of downtown for most domestic, US and overseas flights.
Mirabel, 55 km (34 miles) northeast of downtown for most charter flights and private aircraft.
Metro Rapid Transit
STM, Montreal Metro, is a great integrated public transit system anchored by 65 light rail/subway stations spread out along four metro lines.
Montreal's Gare Centrale (Central Station),north of Place Bonaventure in downtown, is the terminal al for VIA Rail Quebec City-Windsor route. Blvd. de Maisonneuve E, in the Quartier Latin, just outside the university.
The Station Central de l'Autobus (Central Bus Station) is the terminal for most inter-city bus transport.
